Vastu for Kitchen — Stove, Sink & Direction Rules

The kitchen is the only room in Vastu Shastra that hosts the fire element (Agni). Get the direction wrong and the doshas show up as friction in the family, money leaks, and the cook's health. The good news: most kitchen Vastu issues can be fixed inside an existing kitchen, without ripping out the modular.

1. The South-East rule

The kitchen belongs in the South-East corner (Agneya) of the home. South-East is governed by Agni — fire — and is the natural home for cooking.

2. Stove direction

The stove or cooktop is the heart of the kitchen. Place it in the South-East corner of the kitchen room itself, even if the kitchen as a whole isn't in the South-East of the house.

Other stove rules:

• The stove must not face the main kitchen door.
• The cook should face East while cooking — second-best is North.
• Do not place the stove directly under a window — the flame should be steady.
• Never place the stove right next to the sink (fire next to water is a major dosh).

3. Sink direction

The sink is the water element and belongs in the North-East of the kitchen. The stove and sink must be separated. The classical rule is:

• If the stove is in the South-East, the sink goes in the North-East.
• If both are forced onto the same counter, leave at least 3 feet of clear platform between them.
• The sink and stove should never be directly opposite each other across the kitchen.

4. Storage, fridge and water filter

• Refrigerator: South-West or South corner. Avoid placing it in the North-East.
• Storage / dry goods: South or West wall, in tall solid cabinets — this side should be "heavy".
• Water filter / drinking water pot: North-East — the same direction as the sink.
• Microwave / oven: South-East counter.
• Dustbin: South or West, out of sight, never North-East.

5. Colour and lighting

The kitchen is a fire room, so warm tones reinforce its energy. Use:

• Wall colour: light yellow, peach, warm orange, off-white.
• Avoid: dark blue, black, dark grey — these dampen the fire element.
• Lighting: bright over the stove, no flickering bulbs.

6. Remedies for a wrong-direction kitchen

You don't need to move the kitchen. Apply these compensating fixes:

1. Shift the stove to the South-East corner of the existing kitchen.
2. Move the sink as close to North or North-East as the plumbing allows.
3. Make the cook face East — sometimes just rotating the cooktop 90° on the platform does it.
4. Hang a small picture of the rising sun on the East wall.
5. Use warm yellow accent paint or tiles in the South-East corner.
6. Keep the North-East corner of the kitchen always clean and uncluttered.
