10 Common Vastu Doshas & Remedies — No Demolition
Updated 13 June 2026 · 9 min read
A Vastu dosh is any defect in your home's layout, direction or fixture placement that goes against Vastu Shastra. Most homes have a few. The good news: the vast majority of doshas have remedies that don't involve a single hammer. Here are the 10 we flag most often in Vaastu.live scans, with the fix for each.
Dosh #1
Toilet in the North-East
The biggest dosh in a home. The North-East (Ishan) is the most sacred corner — a toilet there is believed to drain the family's well-being and finances.
Remedy: keep the toilet door always closed. Place a small mirror on the outside of the toilet door (facing away from the toilet). Keep a bowl of sea salt inside the toilet, changed weekly. Hang a Vastu pyramid in the North-East of the adjoining living area.
Dosh #2
Kitchen and toilet sharing a wall
Fire (kitchen) and water-waste (toilet) directly next to each other is a strong dosh — both for health and for the cook.
Remedy: shift the stove as far from the shared wall as possible. Hang a heavy painting on the kitchen side of the wall. Keep the toilet door always closed.
Dosh #3
Kitchen door directly opposite the main door
Wealth that enters through the main door goes straight into the fire and gets "burnt".
Remedy: install a curtain or wooden screen between the two doors. Place a wind chime in the corridor. Keep the kitchen door half-closed when not in use.
Dosh #4
Bed under an overhead beam
A ceiling beam directly above the sleeping body is read as constant compression — headaches, restless sleep, marital friction.
Remedy: move the bed even a foot so the body isn't under the beam. If you can't, install a fabric canopy below the beam, or use a false ceiling treatment to flatten it visually.
Dosh #5
Mirror facing the bed
One of the most common bedroom doshas. A mirror reflecting the sleeping body disturbs sleep and is associated with extra-marital friction.
Remedy: move the mirror to a side wall, mount it inside a wardrobe, or simply cover it at night with a cloth.
Dosh #6
Stairs rising from the main door
A staircase that starts at the main door is said to send incoming wealth straight up and out.
Remedy: place a small rangoli or doormat just inside the main door. Hang a Ganesha image on the wall facing the door. Place a healthy plant at the foot of the stairs.
Dosh #7
Heavy clutter or storage in the North-East
The North-East should always be light, open and clean — the "in-breath" of the home. Heavy cabinets, shoe racks or junk here is a silent dosh.
Remedy: clear the North-East completely. A small water feature, a healthy plant or a brass bowl of water is the classical placement.
Dosh #8
Light, hollow South-West
Mirror image of dosh #7. The South-West should be the heaviest, most grounded corner of the home. A bathroom, light glass cabinet or empty corner here makes the family feel "ungrounded".
Remedy: shift the master bed, the largest wardrobe or the heaviest cabinet into the South-West. Use warm, earthy colours on the South-West wall.
Dosh #9
Sleeping with the head pointing North
Classical Vastu treats this as the worst sleeping direction. Restless sleep and morning fatigue are typical signs.
Remedy: rotate the bed so the head points South (best) or East (very good). No construction needed — just turn the bed.
Dosh #10
Broken things kept around the house
Cracked mirrors, broken clocks, dead plants, leaking taps — all of these are doshas in their own right. They quietly weigh on the home's energy.
Remedy: the simplest and cheapest Vastu correction. Repair or discard everything broken. Fix the leaking tap this weekend. Replace dead plants with healthy ones. Cracked mirrors must go.
How to actually fix your home, not just read about it
Most people read a Vastu article, mean to fix things, and forget within a week. The way around it: get a scored, prioritised report so you know which dosh to fix first.
