Vastu for Bedroom — Sleeping Direction, Bed & Mirror Rules
Updated 13 June 2026 · 6 min read
The bedroom is where you spend a third of your life. In Vastu Shastra, getting the direction, bed placement and mirror rules right is one of the biggest levers for restful sleep, calm relationships and steady energy. This guide gives you the rules, the doshas, and what to do if your bedroom isn't textbook-correct.
1. The best sleeping direction as per Vastu
The rule is simple. Your head should point South while sleeping. Feet point North.
- South (best): aligns with the Earth's magnetic field, gives the deepest sleep.
- East (very good): recommended for students, learners and anyone who wakes early.
- West (acceptable): may bring restless dreams but otherwise neutral.
- North (avoid): Vastu considers this the worst direction — believed to pull the body's energy field against the Earth's magnetic flow.
Quick check: open the compass on your phone, lie down on the bed, and check which way your head is pointing. If it isn't South or East, simply rotate the bed 90° or 180°. No renovation needed.
2. Which corner of the home should the master bedroom be in?
The master bedroom belongs in the South-West (Nairutya) corner. This direction is governed by the Earth element and is associated with stability, authority and weight. Putting the head of the household in this corner gives them grounded decision-making and protects the family.
Other rooms by direction:
- South-West: Master bedroom.
- North-West: Guest bedroom or children's bedroom (especially daughters).
- South or West: Other family bedrooms.
- North-East: NEVER a bedroom — this corner is reserved for pooja or open space.
3. Bed placement rules
- The bed should rest against a solid wall, ideally the South or West wall.
- Do not place the bed under an overhead beam. If unavoidable, hang a fabric canopy to soften the beam.
- Avoid the bed sitting directly under a window. The head-end wall should be solid.
- Keep at least 2 feet of space on both sides of the bed for energy circulation.
- Do not store sharp metal objects, broken items or shoes under the bed.
4. The mirror rule everyone gets wrong
One of the most common Vastu doshas we flag in Vaastu.live scans: a mirror directly facing the bed. The classical rule is that a mirror should never reflect a sleeping body — it is said to drain energy, disturb sleep, and create friction between partners.
Fixes that take 5 minutes:
- Move the dressing-table mirror to a side wall.
- Place the mirror inside a wardrobe with doors.
- If neither works, cover the mirror with a cloth at night.
5. Colour and material
The bedroom should feel grounded and warm, not stimulating. Vastu colour palette for the bedroom:
- Best: earthy beige, light brown, peach, terracotta, pale pink.
- Avoid: stark white (too cold), bright red (too stimulating), pitch black (heavy energy).
6. What if my bedroom is in the wrong direction?
You don't need to demolish anything. Apply these compensating remedies:
- Rotate the bed so the head points South or East.
- Strengthen the South-West corner of the room with a heavy wardrobe or chest of drawers.
- Use earthy colours and natural wood furniture.
- Keep the North-East corner of the bedroom clean and free of clutter (no shoe rack, no laundry basket).
- Don't hang religious photos directly above the bed — move them to a side wall.
