Main Door Direction as per Vastu Shastra

Updated 13 June 2026 · 8 min read

The main door of your home is what Vastu Shastra calls the mukhya dwar — the mouth of the building. Every form of energy, wealth and opportunity that enters the house comes through it. This is the single most important Vastu decision in a home. Here's all eight directions, honestly ranked.

How to find the direction your main door faces

Stand inside, close the door, then face it from the inside. Open the compass on your phone. The direction the phone shows is the direction your door opens out to. That's what Vastu calls the "facing direction" of the entrance.

Or skip the manual step. Open Vaastu.live, point your phone at the main door from inside the house, and the AI uses the phone compass to auto-detect the direction.

The 8 directions ranked

DirectionRankWhat it brings
North✅ ExcellentWealth, career growth, opportunities flowing in (ruled by Kubera).
East✅ ExcellentHealth, recognition, family well-being (ruled by Indra and the rising sun).
North-East✅ ExcellentSpiritual growth, wisdom, harmony. The most charged corner of the home.
West⚠️ Good with careStability and gains; needs the right pada (zone within the wall).
North-West⚠️ WorkableMovement, support, networking — best for daughters' rooms / guest entry.
South-East⚠️ WorkableEnergy and drive, but needs an active fire element nearby (kitchen / lamp).
South⚠️ ConditionalWorkable if the door is in the auspicious South pada; otherwise needs remedies.
South-West❌ AvoidThe only direction broadly considered inauspicious for a main door.

The "pada" idea — direction is not the whole story

Each wall in Vastu is divided into 9 equal segments called padas. The exact pada the door sits in matters as much as the broad direction.

What if my main door faces South-West?

South-West is the only direction Vastu Shastra broadly flags as inauspicious for the mukhya dwar. You usually can't move the door, so apply remedies:

  1. Hang a Vastu pyramid or a small Ganesha idol above the door, facing inward.
  2. Install a heavy threshold (umbra) with a metal strip — slows the inflow.
  3. Paint the door in a grounded colour like brown, maroon or deep beige. Avoid sky blue or pitch black.
  4. Keep the area outside the door brightly lit at all times (a permanent lamp).
  5. Make sure the South-West corner inside the house is "heavy" — large wardrobe, master bed, or a heavy storage cabinet.
  6. Place a healthy potted plant on either side of the door (no thorns, no cactus).

Things to avoid at the main entrance — any direction

If you're buying a house

Pick North-, East- or North-East-facing if you have the choice. If the only available unit faces South-West, ask whether you can use a side or back entrance as the de-facto main door (a side door in a good direction can serve as the mukhya dwar in Vastu terms).

Not sure which direction your door faces?

Vaastu.live's AI uses your phone compass to detect it automatically and tells you if it's auspicious — plus all the remedies if it isn't.
